A Sense of Who You Are
What many people do not realize is that your online dating profile is the first and the only thing people look at, besides your picture, when looking for someone to date online. The profile is the most important thing. And what you put in it is even more important. There are things that should be in a profile and things you should keep out at all costs.

An online dating profile will give people a sense of the type of person you are, right from the get go, and before you take action to meet someone you can see what that person is going to be like. For example, from your profile, someone will be able to tell what profession you are in, what you look like, provided you give honest information and a real picture of yourself, and what your hobbies and interests may be.

When you are looking for someone online, you have two choices. You can either look for someone who meets your profile needs, or you can just sit and wait for someone to find you and write to you. Either way, your profile needs to be in tip top shape to get a real response form anyone.

Here are some things you should and shouldn’t put in your profile:

  • Try to stay positive. People do not want to hear over and over again that you don’t like certain things. They don’t want to hear about why you left your last job, (even if it was because the manager decided you had too many ethics), or even why you are on the dating site (because your last flame was a psycho)… What people DO want to see, however, is what kinds of things you do like. For example, do you just love pets? Or are you a fan of a certain Romantic comedy that just opened in a theater near you? Or maybe you have gotten a promotion and want to share it with the world? As long as you don’t overdo it and slowly slip into conceit and arrogance, be as positive as you possibly can. When a person sees negative things on someone’s profile, it gets them to thinking they are pessimistic, and most people want nothing to do with a sour puss
  • Be as unique as you can. When it comes to filling in your interests, that is. “Long walks on the beach” is a phrase that gets played out and old very quickly. Try to spice up your wording a bit while being as honest as you can. For example, turn “I love to play golf” into I love playing golf while listening to Salsa music.” Being a bit different will catch people’s attention and maybe pique their interest enough that they will want to talk to you personally.
  • Never be the generic type. People get real tired real quick when they read “the same” profile over an over again. Would you want to date or talk to someone who looks like they copied their profile from the first one they fund? And to top it off, the one they found to copy was probably copied two or three times over. Cookie cutter profiles just don’t cut it anymore. Be different. If you did something, tell the story. If you want to do something, write why right along with the statement. It gives people the impression you put effort into the profile, so you might just put some effort into the relationship as well.
  • Never, ever, under any circumstances, NEVER use sexual innuendo in any form on your profile, or in chat or the forums… Never put it anywhere. It is lewd, raunchy ad will make you look like a whore, if you are a woman and a perverted sleaze if you are a guy. And I am pretty sure you are not any of these things, right? So why would you use language on your profile that makes you look bad? Besides, unless you are looking for a one night stand, people looking for a long term commitment usually won’t use this kind of language anyway. And if you are looking for one night stands, there are other, adult themed, sites for that sort of thing.
  • Keep your profile as up to date as you can. Just like you update Twitter or FaceBook, you want to keep your profile as fresh as you would any social networking site. This lets people know you are attentive and care for things. Add personal touches to your profile just like you would the others, too. Add pictures and stories, or maybe an update here and there. It just might draw some people in that may not have gotten a vibe from you before.
  • Be specific about what kind of person you are looking for. By noting on the profile, in a nice way, you are for example, looking only for dark haired people, it will cut down the traffic of people you might not be interested in. It is a great frustration and time saver for both parties. You just need to do it tactfully.
  • Following these tips will get you started on the road to a greet profile that will not only be useful, it will be tactful and interesting. It just might be enough to lure in the perfect person you have been looking for all your life.

    Food For Thought…
Think about it this way. If you were in a bar, or in the mall, or anywhere you would normally meet someone on the fly, usually a person doesn’t have the time to think up of a good conversation starter. At least with an online dating site profile, you have all the time in the world to think about what it is you want to portray to the world. So use the time you have wisely and make your profile the one that stands out above all the rest, and find that dream soul mate.
